Chalkboard: the Little Black Dress of Decorating

It's no secret that I'm a chalkboard enthusiast.  Large, small, or anywhere in between, I just love 'em.  I love how you can make them work with pretty much any décor, in pretty much any room of the house.  I use my many chalkboards to death, changing the look with each of the seasons, adding quotes I love, moving them from room to room, & then erasing them & starting all over again.

Just like you can change the look of a basic little black dress by switching it up with accessories, you can change up the look of a chalkboard just by what you draw on it.

Remember some of these from my kitchen?  The chalkboard sets the tone for the décor for the different seasons.

And how about some of these great chalkboards?

Ooohh!  I love them all.  And since I can always find room for one more, I just made another one for my breakfast room shelves. Stay tuned to see that soon.  Where do you need a chalkboard?

  1. I agree! I love how chalkboards are a blank canvas. I'm in the process of painting a small wall between my mudroom and kitchen with chalkboard paint and I can't wait to use it!

  2. I've had a crush on the chalkboard above your stove for a while! I love it and always think I wish we didn't have that microwave above ours! But I'm thinking about where else I could put one. Thanks for sharing some serious inspiration :) I totally dig the ones on a tree stump!

  3. I have a chalkboard in my dining room. It's fun when guests come over to write the menu. In the images you shared, I especially like the chalkboard on the kitchen cabinet. It would be a great place to post a grocery list!

  7. I recently tried making a chalkboard, on thin mdf board. (I think that's what it's called.). I put two coats on with the spray chalk board paint and I'm not happy with the results. I followed directions, even! Is there a better surface or paint to use? I think I used the Krylon product. Not positive. Help, please!

    1. I'm wondering if maybe you need more coats of the paint. I know they recommend 2, but I've always done at least 3 thin coats & I've always had great results. And I almost always use the thin particle board (also called Eucaboard) with the smooth side. If this is what you used, maybe just try spraying on a couple more coats. Hope that helps!
